CD3 - Verbatim (1996)

The American conceptual composer is widely known in avant-garde music circles for his work in sampling and computer music, and was one of the first artists to use computers and samplers in free improvisation during the '80s, often alongside John Zorn, Fred Frith Phil Minton, and the like. Additionally working in multimedia performance and solo computer compositions, his work is often devised with a political agenda to the fore, and, throughout the '90s, he made some of the most challenging and intellectually inspired experimental music coming out of the U.S.A. This CD is the third in a project entitled "Say No More," which was devised as a work for exploring and challenging the relationships between humans and technology. With this composition, Ostertag set out to link his computer composition to the free-form improvising of Drummer Gerry Hemmingway, vocalist Phil Minton, and bassist Mark Dresser. The trio performed improvisations that Ostertag recorded and sampled, making a new arrangement from the performance on computer. The players then learned how to perform this new version, and Ostertag repeated this process again multiple times. The end result is this piece of sampled fragments of the band's performance. The work is a vital and highly experimental composition that challenges the concepts of improvisation and composition -- one could say that it is a work made in the gray area between the two disparate forms. Quite an achievement to straddle that divide. AMG

CD4 - Verbatim, Flesh & Blood (2000)

Verbatim, Flesh and Blood is the conclusion of an ambitious project initiated with the 1993 CD Say No More. Bob Ostertag asked three musicians (drummer Gerry Hemingway, bassist Mark Dresser, and vocalist Phil Minton) to separately record solo improvisations. He loaded the tapes in a computer, fragmented the material, and recombined the samples into two compositions, putting together a "band" that had never played a note together. This first phase was released as Say No More. The composer then asked the musicians to learn their parts and they performed the material live. A recording, Say No More in Person, documented the tour. Ostertag took the live recording, loaded it in a computer, fragmented the material, and composed another piece, Verbatim. Once again, the band performed it live and you arrive at Verbatim, Flesh and Blood, recorded live in January 1998. With each phase the music has been transformed (the musicians were allowed freedom when interpreting the piece live) and if there is a certain similitude in the musical vocabulary developed (these are the same musicians after all), the music itself has evolved stylistically. You are far from the in-your-face approach of Say No More: quiet passages abound, textures are more refined, dynamics wider, and the whole thing is more pensive and introspective, without being self-absorbed. Ostertag's sampler playing is also better integrated with the band's work and Phil Minton's voice is used in less cartoonish ways. This whole project will go down in history as one of the most original artistic propositions of the 1990s.AMG

The 4th and final recording in the "Say No More" project. Flesh and Blood is derived from Ostertag's human /virtual collaboration with three master improvisors. First, the players recorded solos, which Ostertag assembled into a work called Say No More. Next, the group learned this "virtual trio" music and played it live (Say No More In Person). Then Verbatim (BRD 029) was assembled on computer from fragments of live performances of Say No More in Person. Finally, the group learned the third-generation work and performed it live at the Kunstencentrum Vooruit, Gent, Belgium in January 1998.
