CD1 Steppin' With The World Saxophone Quartet

The second recording by The World Saxophone Quartet gives one a well-rounded look at this powerful group. Comprised of altoist Julius Hemphill (who contributes four of the six group originals), altoist Oliver Lake, tenorman David Murray and baritonist Hamiet Bluiett, the explorative yet rhythmic group is heard in their early prime on this stimulating release. CD 2 W.S.Q.

There is plenty of variety to the third album by the unique World Saxophone Quartet. The music ranges from nearly free improvisations to the four-part "Suite Music," which was almost completely written out. Rather than being a screamfest for the four innovative saxophonists (baritonist Hamiet Bluiett, altoists Julius Hemphill and Oliver Lake and tenor saxophonist David Murray, all of whom double on other reeds), this is a well constructed and sometimes surprisingly accessible (although always explorative) program.AMG

CD 3 Revue

No permutation of instruments can be more sheerly tedious and yet more compelling than four saxophones together. The difference lies int he players involved and, for as many years as anyone cares to remember, the World Saxophone Quartet has been the market-leader.

CD 4 Live In Zurich

By 1981, after four years of existence, it was obvious that the most talented writer in the World Saxophone Quartet was altoist Julius Hemphill. This Black Saint release finds Hemphill contributing six of the eight pieces (the other two are by Hamiet Bluiett), including the hard-swinging "Bordertown," the colorful "Steppin" and a vivid feature for David Murray's tenor on "My First Winter." A particularly strong release by a classic and innovative group.AMG

CD 5 Live At Brooklyn Academy Of Music

The World Saxophone Quartet's first recording in four years found the group's power and adventurous nature unchanged. In existence on a part-time basis for eight years at this point, the band still sounded quite unique, making avant-garde explorations almost seem accessible at times and playing quite rhythmically in places even without the presence of a rhythm section. Altoists Julius Hemphill and Oliver Lake, tenor saxophonist David Murray and baritonist Hamiet Bluiett (all of whom double on other reeds) were individually quite innovative, but they were also able to blend together to form an unusual group sound. Of their six originals, it is as usual the three Hemphill contributions that are most memorable.AMG

CD 6 Moving Right Along

This title applies to The World Saxophone Quartet's personnel as well as its music. Charter residents David Murray, Oliver Lake and Hamiett Bluiett were joined by special guest James Spaulding on two tracks, making it a quintet, and throughout by new member Eric Person. Person's composition "Antithesis," like several other selections, represented a change in the group's approach. Instead of their hallmark collectively improvised unison passages, most numbers had one or two featured soloists, with the others operating as harmony/contrast players. The WSQ did its usual array of material, from bubbling R&B and funk-tempered numbers to hard bop and swing-oriented tunes, plus two stirring renditions of "Amazing Grace."AMG
