         2001年,Bill Dixon 将其1970 - 1990 年截止的独奏作品汇成6张的套装出版。因为没有通过发行商出版,所以在演奏曲目的挑选上应该更有Bill Dixon 自己的想法。可以说是Bill Dixon 演奏风格和演奏思想上的完全体现。
        
        Bill Dixon 最早的生涯并非在演奏上,而是在自由爵士的推广上花了更多的时间。早在1950年代联合国工作时就建立了UN Jazz Society,1964年Bill Dixon 与Cecil Taylor 、Sun Ra等人在曼哈顿举行了October Revolution in Jazz为期四天的活动。随后Bill Dixon 创立了Jazz Composers Guild 组织。作为一位音乐教授,Bill Dixon 在黑人音乐的推广上可谓不遗余力。如果说Bill Dixon 与爵士历程里的大师上有什么不同的特质,Bill Dixon 或许是唯一的可以称之为 “先生”  的自由爵士先驱。

      这套录音基本来自1970年代,CD1曾经在1985年由Cadence Jazz Records出版过。其余大部均为首次出版,尤其是CD6 的谈话及朗诵更是难得的录音。Bill Dixon 也是较早使用电子延时和混响演奏小号的爵士演奏家。听Bill Dixon 的独奏作品,沉静、内敛、统一无时不在。从传统到自由的脉络在Bill Dixon 的演奏里自然过度。Bill Dixon 的演奏更具有知识分子固有的书生意趣。意会 - 是为Bill Dixon 的演奏境界。
